With the sword to the afterlife

Only a few late Slavic cemeteries have been discovered so far, but two in Kyritz and Wusterhausen. The Kyritzer graves on the banks of the Untersee had to give way in 1926 to create a path to the lakeside settlement. Most of the graves contained no burial objects, as is more typical of Christian funeral rites.

A man whose grave had been dug particularly deep was given an iron sword that has now been lost - presumably he belonged to the ruling elite that resided at the castle in Untersee.

It was not until 1984, during construction work to the north and west of the church, that it turned out that a Slavic burial ground was also hidden in the center of Wusterhausen. In 2006, more than 100 tombs were uncovered in the vicinity of the church during road construction work.
