Pictures of “excursions” of the Schutztruppe
This photo was also published in a book by Oscar Zimmermann, in which the punitive expedition is described from the perspective of the Schutztruppe officers: Through Bush and Steppe - Members of the Schutztruppe Kamerun on the Jaunde-Jabassi Expedition April to June 1901, Berlin 1909, page 139. Among others, Staff Doctor Hösemann and Medical Corporal Schnitzler are pictured.
Punitive expedition
The punitive expedition, carried out from September to December 1900, was intended to collect "war reparations" demanded by the colonial power and "restore peace in the country." Strümpell's collections originate from this campaign, among others. Ipscher and Strümpell likely knew each other; Ipscher did not participate in the expedition; he only arrived in Cameroon at the end of October.
Bangoua (Bangwa) is a community and kingdom of the Bamileke people in western Cameroon, known for its important wood carvings.
