Katja Pfeiffer: "The lifespan of the catfish, Europe's largest freshwater fish at up to 2 metres in length, is similar to that of humans. And so very old specimens in the Untersee could still tell stories about how Peter Dentler used to drive his boat to the specially installed "Dentler fountain" to turn it on by hand. The catfish's broad heads make up more than twenty percent of their total length - who knows what is going on inside them? Perhaps the fish observe with amazement what is happening on the surface of their lake during the summer holidays, the changes in swimwear, the passenger shipping operations and the guests from near and far. Perhaps they welcome the ban on motorboats and listen as they grow and thrive to see if a fishing hook is thrown out somewhere."

Katja Pfeiffer
Katja Pfeiffer studied art and educational sciences at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and history at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. She studied art under Günther Uecker, Alfonso Hüppi and Jan Dibbets. Alfonso Hüppi appointed her master student and she has worked as a freelance artist ever since. Her work spans a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, collage and installation.
In 2006, she was appointed Professor of Art in the field of artistic practice at the Faculty of Design and Art at the University of Wuppertal. From 2020 to 2024, she headed the faculty as dean. Since 2024, she has been concentrating intensively on the reopening of the Kunsthalle Barmen, which is run by the University of Wuppertal, with a special focus on cultural education and the communication of contemporary art.
